Over the past few years, the April 20th holiday has become well-known in pop culture. The most widely accepted origin story of 4/20 involves a group of California high school students who gave themselves the nickname the Waldos. The Waldos went to high school in San Rafael and were believed to be on the search for a rumored cannabis crop that a Coast Guard member had abandoned. The students would meet at 4:20 to search for the crop.
Although it is believed that the students never did find that crop, the teens started to use the term “420” as a type of code to meet up and smoke weed. After one of the Waldos became a roadie for the Grateful Dead band, the term spread like wildfire. The roadie believed 4:20 was the acceptable time of day to start smoking weed.

Over the years, advocacy efforts have taken the forefront on April 20th. As part of the celebrations, many NYC organizations have held rallies and walks to raise awareness about the importance of marijuana legalization efforts. Through the efforts of many on 4/20 and beyond, recreational cannabis is now legal in New York. As long as you’re 21, you’re allowed to possess up to three ounces of flower and 0.85 ounces of cannabis concentrate.
